It causes harm to society, the society that you live in. This can work out for you if you are, for example, Comcast, and you find some way to corner the market with regulatory capture. You are optimizing for taking people's money. If, instead, you create a feedback loop so that *regardless of whether the software is good, your users still pay you money* then you are no longer optimizing for good software. In order to make good software, you want to set up a feedback loop so that when your software is good, you get money, and when it is bad, you don't get money. I'm guessing you're good people and you want to make good software. That's great, and they should pay for the service you're providing. Still, relentless 'you need to upgrade' popups and I haven't successfully seen any data about my wifi coverage. It's worth it to me to get a good sense of the wifi coverage and I figure I can request a return if this doesn't work for me, so I pay for an upgrade. The app relentlessly gave me pop-ups at each step that gave me the impression that I couldn't use any functionality without upgrading.
